Safe use of gas in cylinders

To work properly, rationally and safely with butane-propane mixtures or propane, the user must know the basic characteristics of the gas in its liquid or gaseous state. The user must wear the mandatory personal protective equipment when handling the gas.

Employees working with gases must be properly trained in accordance with the requirements of the legal regulations.

Safe cylinder connection and replacement

  • Make sure the valves on both cylinders are closed.
  • Inspect and replace the regulator seal.
  • Screw the regulator onto the cylinder valve.
  • Open the valve. Check the connection between the valve and the regulator with a dedicated spray or soapy water.
  • If the joint between the valve on the cylinder and the regulator does not seal, close the valve on the cylinder and inspect the seal and the bearing. Re-tighten the regulator and check for leaks.
  • If the joint is still leaking, close the valve, take the cylinder to an open area and inform your supplier.

Tips for storing and using the cylinder

The following guidelines should be observed when storing and using cylinders safely in companies.

  • Cylinders must be stored in an upright position in a suitable storage area in accordance with the applicable regulations. The storage area must not be lower than the surrounding ground.
  • The layout of the storage site must also take into account all fire safety requirements in accordance with the applicable legislation.
  • The storage area must be well ventilated and within adequate distance from ignition sources.
  • Before replacing the cylinder, the valves on the gas installation and on the cylinder must be closed.
  • When unscrewing the lock nut and unscrewing the old, empty cylinder and screwing the new, full cylinder onto the gas installation, note that there is a left-hand thread on the fitting (unscrew clockwise, screw anticlockwise).
  • Every time the gas cylinder is replaced, the rubber seal of the regulator is replaced and the leak is checked with a special spray or soapy water.
  • All gas appliances for indoor use must be fitted with a thermal protector.

  • inspecting and replacing gas pressure regulators every 2 years or as recommended by the manufacturer,
  • checking the operation of the gas consumer, burner or stove by an authorised repairman according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • for fixed gas installations, it is mandatory to inspect the gas installation from the fire hydrant to the gas consumer once a year in accordance with the applicable legislation.

What to do if you detect the smell of gas?

  • Extinguish the flame on the gas consumer.
  • Close the valve on the cylinder.
  • Open windows and doors to ventilate the area.
  • Tighten the protective nut on the cylinder.
  • Take the cylinder to an open area.
